100 Free or Cheap Volunteer Work Opportunities Abroad
Volunteer work has become big business. Hundreds of gap year companies are there to guide timid gappers into a voluntary project, but if you are willing to be brave and do it all yourself it can be much, much cheaper.
61. Save the Wild Chinchillas, Chile
Cute big eared rodent like things are in need of your help. Save the Wild Chinchillas is trying to prevent these endangered animals becoming extinct through a mixture of education and promoting awareness, protecting the land and creating sustainable preserves.
62. Seattle International Beerfest, USA
Earn beer money. The festival is made possible by beer loving volunteers. One shift gets you ten free beer tickets, a t-shirt and a glass, three shifts equates to 43 beers. Cheers. The festival, along with another held in Portland, is in July.
63. Hosteria PapaGayo, Ecuador
A bed and food are offered in exchange for participation in three different volunteer roles. These are helping out at the Papagayo hostel, teaching in local schools, and working at a surrounding dairy farm.
64. The Alaska Radio Mission, USA
Broadcasting to isolated Eskimo villages, volunteers have been critical to this station's success. Only 15 per cent of applications are accepted but those successful will receive room and board, round trip air transportation, health insurance and a monthly cash stipend. Volunteers work in a variety of positions including DJ, producing feature interviews and documentary programmes, news reporters and producers.
65. Christina Noble Children's Foundation, Vietnam
CNCF helps children in need with education, medical care, social opportunities, and job placement. Experienced volunteers over the age of 21 and able to stay for three months are accepted. Volunteers must be entirely self funded. CNCF also operates in Mongolia.
66. Long Way Home, Guatemala
It is Guatemalan kids that you will be helping if you chose to join Long Way Home as a volunteer. LWH seek many talents from fixing engines or laying concrete to playing games and horsing around. A $50 weekly donation is welcomed to cover the costs of your accommodation.
67. Hellenic Wildlife Hospital, Greece
The HWH undertakes many tasks involved with the care and protection of bird life in Greece. They have cleaning, feeding and maintenance tasks waiting for volunteers who take the hour and a half ferry ride from Piraeus to Aigina Island. Accommodation is provided but volunteers pay their own costs.
68. Colibris Women's Artisan Cooperative, Ecuador
Projects where your participation will be appreciated include helping to improve the English of the women and their children, organic gardening and developing new designs for art and craft products. Volunteers pay a small fee to cover the cost of their food and homestay.
69. Takatifu Gardens, Kenya
A community centre in western Kenya founded by Kenyans and Australians, current activities for volunteers include helping school children to read English and organising a youth running club.
70. Appalachian Trail Conservancy, USA
Trail crews spend a week or more in the backwoods helping to maintain the 2,000 plus miles of the Appalachian Trail stretching from Georgia to Maine.
