100 Free or Cheap Volunteer Work Opportunities Abroad
Volunteer work has become big business. Hundreds of gap year companies are there to guide timid gappers into a voluntary project, but if you are willing to be brave and do it all yourself it can be much, much cheaper.
81. Roskilde Festival, Denmark
It takes around 7,500 volunteers to make this large music festival come together. Applications are taken from the end of March.
82. Pinkpop, the Netherlands
Information on volunteering appears on the website six months before the three day festival begins at the end of May. Jobs are typical for a music festival and most volunteers will find themselves behind a bar, picking up litter or stewarding.
83. Ugunja Community Resource Centre, Uganda
A small NGO in western Kenya promoting sustainable development. International placements, from a few days to two years, are available revolving around issues such as sustainable agriculture, preserving indigenous knowledge and youth empowerment. Expect to pay $15 to $40 per week for food and accommodation and a suggested $35 weekly donation.
84. Volunteer for Nature, Canada
Spare a couple of weeks to help preserve Ontario's natural heritage. Past volunteers have conducted wildlife surveys, restored and enhanced habitats, and reduced human impacts in sensitive natural areas.
85. Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife, South Africa
A wildlife hospital that cares for up to 400 injured and orphaned wild animals and birds in Kwazulu Natal, CROW is considered to be one of the leading rehabilitation centres in South Africa.
86. Sangkheum Center, Cambodia
Meaning 'hope' in Khymer, the Sangkheum Center for Children provides education, training, scholastic support and care to children between the ages of 4 and 17. Volunteers can help by teaching English or sports, running craft projects or assist with the business end of things.
87. HF Holidays, Europe
The chance to explore Europe for free is offered to confident, sociable and diplomatic people able to guide tour groups around European cities. Experience and language skills are essential. Hotel accommodation and meals are provided.
88. UTA Tanzania, Tanzania
UTE links volunteers with organisations on Ukerewe, an island in Lake Victoria. A one off fee of $120 is payable and put towards buying textbooks and work tools.
89. Traveller not Tourist, Peru
While tourists will be happy to be led around the sights of Arequipa, travellers may wish to help out with the community projects on offer here. Volunteers work to improve the lot of local children and Traveller not Tourist charge a one off $60 fee. The minimum involvement is two weeks.
90. Sacred Suenos, Ecuador
With the aim of regenerating a small piece of mountainside into a self sufficient farm community, volunteers participate in all aspects of the community. Volunteers contribute $20 per week towards the food kitty and a donkey service is available to take your luggage up the mountain.
