At
ACE we arrange for young people to do conservation
work on Game Reserves in southern Africa becoming
involved in a wide range of conservation and research
projects. This varies across the Reserves and may
include darting rhino for relocation or elephant
for fitting tracking collars. Game capture, tagging,
wildlife veterinary work and game counts and monitoring
may be part of the work programme. Alien plant control
and the re-introduction of indigenous plants is
often part of conservation projects. Student volunteers
usually work as part of a team under the supervision
of experienced coordinators.
Prerequisites
Must be physically reasonably fit and able to
cope mentally. Enthusiasm for conservation essential.
Of special interest to students of environmental,
zoological and biological sciences, veterinary science
and animal care.
Duration and Time of Placements
4 - 12 weeks. Throughout the year.
Where
All of southern Africa, including South Africa,
Zimbabwe, etc.
Costs Involved
Varies at different reserves and different times
of the year. Examples are £1795 (4 weeks)
to £2275 (12 weeks) on Kagga Kamma. Students
can expect an average cost of £3500 for 12
weeks. This includes flights, transfers, and usually
full board. Support and advise on fund raising.
Selection Procedures and Orientation
From the completed Application Form, students
are invited to attend an Introduction Weekend at
a UK based Activity and Training Centre.
