Azafady is a registered UK charity (no. 1079121) and Malagasy NGO working to alleviate poverty, improve well-being and preserve beautiful unique environments in southeast Madagascar. We are an award winning team that works alongside rural communities on integrated conservation and development projects helping communities to build a better future for themselves.

Volunteers are needed to work with NGO in Madagascar working on integrated conservation & development projects.

Work
Pioneer Madagascar is a ten-week volunteer scheme, run by Azafady, departing four times a year in January, April, July and October. Pioneers gain first hand experience of frontline development and conservation work with NGO Azafady. Volunteers live, work and travel through some of the most beautiful and remote parts of southeast Madagascar. Living under canvas with basic facilities, the types of projects that Pioneers will be involved include: building wells to provide clean water which helps protect villagers from the spread of cholera; monitoring endemic and endangered lemur species; assisting with GPS and other data-collection for forest management plans or establishing community market gardens and beehives to improve nutrition and provide villagers with alternative incomes.

As part of the scheme, volunteers are asked to raise through fundraising a minimum donation of 2,000. This goes directly to support Azafadys charitable work, with only a small proportion used to cover the volunteers food, safe water, in-country travel, orientation and language training whilst in Madagascar. Full support and advice is given to applicants on fundraising, international travel, visas, insurance and medical preparations before the expedition. Groups of 10 15 Pioneers are accompanied by dedicated staff whilst in Madagascar. Pioneer is open to people over the age of 18 of reasonable fitness. No specific qualifications are required; we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are happy to participate in the varied on-going projects of Azafady.
