Teach English in China

It can be daunting for a new teacher to stand in front of a class for the first time. Even more so should that teacher contemplate flying thousands of miles to a new and unfamiliar country to do it.

BUNAC match the desire of young English speakers to travel and experience foreign cultures with that of the burgeoning demand for English language tuition in the emerging economies of Russia and China.

While demand for English has long been strong in South East Asia, South America and Africa, economic and political barriers shielded China and the old Soviet Union from its influence. The fall of the Berlin Wall changed that nearly 15 years ago. As the eastern Europeans flocked to the west, the English language broke through to the east and into Russia. In China, the politics are still communist but a creep towards free market competition has led to a rapid growth of English language schools and a need for teachers of English as a foreign, or second, language.

The BUNAC programme is aimed at first time teachers. Participants are put through their paces on a four week teacher training course (not required if you already hold a satisfactory TEFL or TESOL qualification). Once that has been completed and passed, teachers are dispatched to schools in Russia or China for six months.

The programme costs around £1500 and covers travel, training and accommodation.

Teachers will receive a monthly salary in the local currency equivalent to $450 a month plus free accommodation with the bills taken care of; usually in a shared furnished flat.

To apply you must be a native English speaker, over 18, and educated to A level standard. BUNAC will also require applicants to show commitment, an interest in other cultures, and open minded flexibility.
