Career Breaks on the Rise
An estimated extra quarter of a million Britons may be taking a career break in 2009, according to leading travel insurance provider InsureandGo.
Spurned on by job losses, older gappers are increasingly looking at the credit crunch as an opportunity to travel overseas for longer periods than they could normally, often with the blessing of employers.
Lauren Mackay, brand manager at Gap Year for Grown Ups, commented that "employers are encouraging people to take a break from their career to reduce the workplace headcount."
Compared to 2007, before the recession, the number of long stay travel insurance policies InsureandGo is selling to customers aged 35 and over has risen by 40% and they estimate that almost 2.7 million people between 35 and 54 have recently been or intend to go travelling soon.
Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo, said: "The massive increase we’ve seen in long stay policies sold to people over 35 is a sign that lots of people are using redundancy - or the threat of it - as a reason to take time out, travel the world and enjoy the really important things in life."
"Given the ongoing economic uncertainty and concerns that unemployment will continue to rise during 2010, we don’t see any sign of this trend stopping just yet."
