Emilios
bar
"hi,
having just read the october edition of jobs abroad, i
would like to advise you not to carry on advertising the
job at emilios bar, Spain.
I
worked there last summer 2003, after finding the job through
the book 'Summer Jobs Abroad 2003'. Although i enjoyed
the job very much initially, i soon found out that the
owner, emilio is a manipulative con man. Although the
pay, 100 euros, was expected, i did also expect tips.
Emilio asked all us waitresses to put the tips in a tin
which he would count and share accordingly. I soon came
to realise that he was taking a share too and although
i suggested many times that we just keep our own tips,
he always got verbally aggressive.
Emilio
only employs girls, which is customary in Spain, but he
tried to come on to all of us after closing, even telling
us about his intentions to use the bar for special customers
only after 4am, with us dancing etc for the men. This
would not really have been a problem had he not started
to get very nasty and cynical as he could see I did not
want to do this.
I
lived in the appartment he provides, yet this became very
difficult as he was watching my every move from his house
nearby, even trying to tell me that no one could come
to my appartment.
All
this might seem very trivial but i just feel that he is
taking advantage of young girls because he knows he can
manipulate them as they need the job. In
the end i quit because emilio was a control freak who
got nasty when i didnt play happy.
It
is a risk when you take on a bar job in another country
when you don't really know that much about it, so i wanted
to make sure that no other english girl will have an upsetting
experience like i did.
thankyou,
Laura Bargery"
