Balkans Peace Park Project - With the aim of facilitating the creation of a transnational park in the adjoining mountain areas of Kosovo, Montenegro and northern Albania, self funding volunteers are needed to help teach English during the eight week summer programme at the Thethi School in Albania. At the time of writing there are plans for construction projects in Montenegro and Kosovo.

Beloit College - Places English conversation teachers in Hungary, Poland, Romania, Latvia and Lithuania.

BKC International House Foreign Language School - Russian English school. Employs around 200 teachers from the UK, Ireland and North America. It offers 9 month contracts in and around Moscow to teachers with Cambridge/RSA CELTA qualifications. Perks include free accommodation, salary, visa support and 5 weeks paid holidays. Teachers with other TEFL qualifications and experience are welcome in their other schools around Moscow.

The British Council, Poland - For teachers and students of English.

Language Link Russia - Have a programme that combines Russian language study with paid part time work in an international language centre. Participants pay a programme fee in advance for accommodation, Russian tuition and administrational expenses, but they receive wages for teaching their native language. No qualifications or experience needed. Voluntary work in Siberia and paid teaching jobs are also available.

Language Studio - Language Studio offers 12 month teaching contracts for qualified teachers of English at their two schools in St. Petersburg.

Personnel Agency - A European agency based in Bratislava, capital of the Slovak Republic. They offer services for Slovak students seeking vacation jobs in the territories of Slovakia and Czech Republic and further afield.

Prague Square Hostel - Hostel that sometime employs English speaking staff.

Program-Bell - Polish tefl school. Employ British and American teachers equipped with a tefl qualification and a university degree.

Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste - A German peace and volunteer service organisation founded in the aftermath of World War II to confront the legacy of the Nazi regime. Their mission is accomplished through long term and short term volunteer programs. In the Czech Republic volunteers work at the memorial site of Theresienstadt (Terezín), they visit the elderly of the Jewish community in Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc and Prague, they support Czech refugees and give help to initiatives of the Roma minority.

American Jewish Joint Distribution Commitee - A Jewish humanitarian assistance organisation that provides assistance to Jewish communities in several eastern European countries. As part of the year long Jewish Service Corps volunteers will work to promote Jewish identity and community development by organising and guiding others in Jewish educational, cultural, social, and religious programmes. Volunteers should have a strong Jewish background and a passion for transmitting it, as well as experience in formal/informal education or social welfare.

Armenian Volunteer Corps -Open to diasporan Armenians from any part of the world, who posses the motivation and ability to volunteer themselves, their time and their talents to Armenia for a long or short service term (minimum of 1 month), and are above the age of 21. Past volunteers have ranged from the ages of 21 to 72. There are no language requirements.

Balkan Sunflowers - An international grassroots organisation, founded in 1999 to aid the Kosovar refugees, Balkan Sunflowers runs a summer camp between June and August.

Baroque Hostel - Accepts enthusiastic young travellers in Budapest who can work and party hard where necessary.

Cinnamon Sally Backpackers - If you have decided to stay in Riga for at least two weeks and you don’t mind putting in a couple of hours of hostel work a day, then there will be no need to pay for a bed here. They might also throw in a free tour too.

DAD International - DAD provides summer and winter activity and learning programmes in Romania. Volunteers are required to help teach English to Romanian children aged eight to 18.

Eko Centar Caput Insulae Beli - A local Croatian organisation that concentrates its efforts to protecting the Eurasian Giffon Vulture. In addition to the volunteer programme ECCIB also runs an ecotourism programme.

EstYES International Youth Association - An Estonian organisation, EstYES run workcamps with the aim of supporting local development and take place in small villages, close knit communities, in the countryside, or in urban areas. A contribution of around €65 is required to cover administration costs and food and accommodation at the project.

Exit Festival - Held near Novi Sad, Serbia, in July, a free ticket is offered to volunteers willing to work as stewards, bar staff and security during the four day festival. Details for volunteers are usually provided on their website around March.

FeelGood Hostel - Party people can work for their keep in Talinn.

Felinarul - A boutique style hostel in Transylvania that may be able to provide relaxed and fun work in the summer hanging out with their guests in exchange for bed, breakfast and dinner. No cleaning is necessary. Couples are welcomed and volunteers should be willing to stay for a month.

GIDIC - Talinn hostel offering one week’s accommodation for working three shifts and the chance to make some money selling tours.

HomePlus - Volunteers need to stay four weeks doing night shifts and cleaning for a dorm bed and some food in Budapest.

Hostel One - Prague hostel takes on helpers working in exchange for a free bed.

Inex Czech Republic - Organise around 40 workcamps in the Czech Republic.

Inex Slovakia - Workcamps organised in Slovakia.

Jahoda - Volunteers are welcome to assist this local non profit organisation which gives a hand to endangered children and families in the Czech Republic.

Jimmy Jumps House - Along with the free accommodation, plus tours, there may also be a chance to earn some coin from this hostel in Vilnius.

Knight House - This Talinn hostel located in a 500 year old building once the residence of the Knights of the Livonian order might be open to some guests working for their keep.

The Monk’s Bunk - Sociable volunteers are expected to lead this Talinn hostel's guests in pub crawls.

Oki Doki - If you like people and parties and are willing to work for accommodation and pocket money there may be a space for you in this Warsaw hostel.

Project Volunteer.cz - The English version of Dobrovolnik.cz (volunteer in Czech) that aims to help non Czech users find volunteer work in the Czech Republic.

Sharing One Language - Volunteers required to support English teachers.

Star Hostel - Volunteers are offered accommodation and food for a minimum of two weeks in Belgrade.

SV Agency - Travel agency run by six young Russians. They can arrange teaching experience in a school in Izhevsk in exchange for room and board. Other programmes include a homestay, camp placement, work experience and au pairing.

Szádvár Castle - Help needed to conserve the castle. Most of the website is in Hungarian.

Tallinn Boutique Hostel - Also called Viru Backpackers, there may be a chance to work for your keep here.

Tallinn Old Town Hostel - Enquire about working for your stay.

Taso Guest House - Work for four to five to weeks in Mostar, Bosnia, over the high season in exchange for food, accommodation and pocket money.

Transylvania Hostel - Has a three to six month internship for EU residents wishing to learn hostel management.

Travellers Inn Hostel Krakow - Describing themselves as a small and cozy hostel in Krakow, they say they don’t employ many people but do occasionally have some vacancies.

United Aid for Azerbaijan - UAFA was founded in 1998 with a mission to aid long term development of life in Azerbaijan, with a particular focus on children, health and education. Volunteers can contribute their skills and time to any of their projects. UAFA state that enthusiasm and patience are amongst the greatest skills needed when working with disadvantaged children.

WWOOF Bulgaria - Part of the WWOOF network that helps volunteers to work on organic farms.

WWOOF Czech Republic - The Czech branch of the organic farm movement can assist those that wish to experience working on an organic farm in the Czech Republic for a small fee.

WWOOF Estonia - A small number of opportunities to volunteer with organic farms.

WWOOF Hungary - Tasks with hosts in Hungary include planting trees, vegetable gardening and improving a fence to keep out foxes.

WWOOF Lithuania - There's only a handful of hosts available but detailed descriptions are given of each.

WWOOF Moldova - At the time of writing there are nine organic farms in Moldova (compared to one when I previously updated this link) offering a good way of finding out more about this little visited country.
