Lead an Overland Expedition
Encounter Overland are always keen to snap up the most energetic and enthusiastic globetrotters. Here, they explain what it is that they look for in a Project Leader Driver

Note: Encounter Overland went bust in February 2001, but this piece gives a good idea of the qualities sought by other overland operators

As a Project Leader Driver with Encounter Overland you are the type of person that makes things happen, not afraid of the unknown and ever thirsty for a new challenge. We run trips in Africa, Asia and South America from 7 days to 32 weeks, visiting the most interesting parts of the world, finding out about their people and cultures.

General requirements for the job include strong leadership qualities and ability to be responsible for the safety and security of up to 24 people for months on end. A strong command of the English language is essential. Maintaining enthusiasm and joviality while under stress. Dealing with difficult people is also a necessity, as they are sometimes the paying customers.

It is necessary to pass a PCV bus-driving test during training in the UK. Repair and maintenance of the overland trucks will be your responsibility. Mechanical aptitude is necessary, but the relevant training in mechanics will form the basis of a 6 month training programme in the UK. Encounter Overland offers the best training programme in the industry and their leaders serve for longer than those of most competitors do. The UK training is followed by a "training trip" overseas with an experienced leader. This may be up to 4 months long.

On successful completion of training a leader will be expected to run solo expeditions. Due to the commitment required and the time spent abroad, applicants must not have emotional or financial ties at home. If you want to see the best in yourself, Encounter Overland may hold the key.
