Green
Working Holidays in Iceland
Organisation:
BTCV
Location:
Skaftafell
National Park, southeast Iceland, a unique green oasis between
vast black Skieðarár sand plain and the Vatnajökull
ice cap.
Details:
BTCV Conservation Holidays offer you the experience of a lifetime.
You can meet people you wouldn't normally meet and do things
you didn't think you could do. In exchange for some physical
work the stress and routine of your normal everyday life will
be washed away and replaced by beautiful scenery, a sense of
achievement and a bunch of new friends! You'll live, laugh and
cook together - and in the evenings you'll get free time to
relax and explore the locality.
The Upland
Trails Project
Work: Upland footpath
repairs and wilderness management in some of the most remote
and beautiful parts of Skaftafell. Tasks may include clearing
vegetation, constructing stone drains and adding gravel surfacing
to sections of eroded footpath. Wilderness management tasks
include way marking trails as well as the removal of invasive
plants and survey work.
Leisure: There will
be plenty of opportunities to explore the park during the long
evenings and during time off. There will be the chance to see
even more of the area during the day off. Trips are planned
to the iceberg lake, Jökulsárlón and the
island Ingólfshöfði, home to thousands of puffins
and other sea birds.
Accommodation: Wilderness
campsites in remote parts of the parts of the Park. Beautiful
locations but please note that facilities there are extremely
basic. Also Skaftafell volunteer base-camp; basic facilities
include hot showers and a small shop.
Eligibility:
No special
skills required but these projects are in some of the most remote
and beautiful terrain of Iceland. A harsh natural environment
with notoriously changeable weather, this is regarded as a strenuous
project and camping and working here is both an adventure and
a challenge with hikes to worksites and arduous tasks. Minimum
age is 18.
Cost:
£570 including flights or £320 without flights.
Departure
Dates:
This project runs from 27th August to 4th September 2005.
Many other projects and dates available.
