Human
Rights Monitoring in Indonesia
Organisation:
Peace Brigades International
Location:
Indonesia
Details:
Peace Brigades International (PBI) is a non-governmental organization
(NGO) which protects human rights and promotes nonviolent
transformation of conflicts.
When
invited, PBI send teams of volunteers into areas of repression
and conflict. The volunteers accompany human rights defenders,
their organizations and others threatened by political violence.
Perpetrators of human rights abuses usually do not want the
world to witness their actions and the presence of volunteers
backed by a support network helps to deter violence. PBI create
space for local activists to work for social justice and human
rights.
The
Indonesia Project of Peace Brigades International (PBI) established,
upon the written request of various Indonesian and East Timorese
human rights groups, a permanent presence of international
volunteers in the region.
PBI
are committed to nonviolence and non-partisanship, engaging
in dialogue and listening to all parties to a conflict. They
do not take sides in a conflict or propose solutions. The
objectives of the PBI Indonesia Project are:
- To
help maintain a peaceful space for civil society to operate
and grow;
- To
model nonviolence and to promote nonviolent resolution
of conflicts;
- To
foster social and political dialogue and reconciliation;
- To
empower civil society in all of the above activities,
so as to reduce and eventually end the need for a PBI
presence.
