School Teaching in Ghana

Location:
Ghana. Participating schools can be found in Accra, the capital city, and in other towns and villages in the southern regions of the country, within a 150 mile radius from the capital Accra.

Details:
GNVS is a non profit organisation which invites and places volunteer teachers from different parts of the world in Ghanaian schools, both in the countryside and urban areas.

You can teach any one or more of these: English, Math, Social Studies, Life Skills, Religious and Moral Studies, Technical Skills, Basic Computer Skills, Fine Art, Environmental studies, Agricultural Science, Integrated Science etc.

A typical day would be to wake at 6.30am, bath, breakfast. Then to school at 7.30-8.00. Teach as your teaching schedule provides. Lunch around 12 noon. Return to teach till 2 or 3pm. (Number of hours of teaching varies from school to school. Range: 2-5 hours of teaching per day). After school hours it's up to the volunteer to plan the remainder of the day. About 6pm: Supper is served. There is no shortage of friendly school colleagues and towns folk to keep you company, show you around and entertain you.

Volunteer placement is for any length of time between of 1 month and six months. This can be extended if you so desire.

Eligibility:
All you need is at least a High School education.

Cost:
The fees are as follows:

  • One Month $500
  • 6 Weeks $640
  • 2 Months $780
  • 3 Months $1,060
  • 4 Months $1,340
  • 5 Months $1,620
  • 6 Months $1,900

You also have to cater for your flight to and from Ghana, drinking water (bottled or bagged), entertainment, touring and sightseeing, and other personal needs.

The Program Fee covers:

  • Airport pick-up
  • First Night's Bed and Breakfast
  • Transportation to placement
  • Accommodation: your own funished room with lock
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day
  • Monthly check-up visits from GNVS officials
  • Airport drop-off from any place in Accra

Departure Dates:
Due to the school calendar in Ghana, volunteers canj be placed only within the following periods (terms) in the year:

  • 15th September to 15th December (1st School Term)
  • 15th January to 15th April (2nd School Term)
  • 15th May to 15th August (3rd School Term)

However,Volunteers may join mid - way due to their flexible nature.

In between these periods, you can still keep your room if you are staying beyond one school term.
