Identification Project Assistant in Scotland
Organisation:
Hebridean
Whale and Dolphin Trust
Location:
Isle of Mull, Scotland.
Details:
The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust welcome volunteers
to help with marine research, education and conservation
projects year round.
The
Trust carries out a variety of research, education and conservation
projects, and also organises and attends a number of marine
based events throughout the year. Volunteering with the
Trust gives an insight into the workings of a busy charity,
and provides valuable experience in a wide range of areas
including scientific data collection, analysis and presentation;
creation of education resources, giving public talks, organising
beach cleans, running workshops and much more.
The
field of marine conservation is highly competitive, and
volunteer work is often required in order to further a career
in this area. Volunteering with the HWDT's dynamic team
of marine conservationists is an enjoyable way to acquire
this experience.
Even
if marine conservation is not your chosen career, they welcome
volunteers with, or looking for, experience in other areas
such as environmental education, marketing, computer skills,
and all other aspects of running a small conservation charity.
The
Photo Identification Project Assistant role is mainly office
based in Tobermory, with boat access possible in summer
months. Tasks include: Management of photo-identification
databases (minke whales, bottlenose dolphins, basking shark)
including database entry and analysis.
Eligibility:
No background knowledge of cetaceans is required, you only
need to be enthusiastic and willing to learn about the marine
mammals and their environment.
Departure
Dates:
Placement available from January 2006. Year round, two
months negotiable.
