Live, Work & Travel in Armenia

Armenia

A Christian country sandwiched in on three sides between Muslim neighbours, Armenia is beginning to normalise relations with some of the nations with which it shares its borders but still shares disputes with Azerbaijan. This makes border crossings a lengthy and uncertain process. Rather than attracting expats, Armenia is better known for its large and vocal diaspora. Work options are limited to a few jobs teaching English and some volunteer work.

Teaching & TEFL in Armenia

ESL Base list English language schools in Armenia, almost all of which are in Yerevan, though almost none of them provide any meaningful information for prospective teachers on their websites. Master Style Education Center is the one exception.

A search through some of the major TEFL websites didn't turn any vacancies - none, zip, nada - but IAB Centre has in the past used our own Jobs Abroad Bulletin to advertise for IELTS/TOEFL trainers and a general/business English trainer. A degree in linguistics was a requirement for both positions. We were searching for positions in May but TeachAway advise looking for jobs in January or February for the school year beginning in September.

According to one teacher, who taught for two years in the country with the Peace Corps, reasons for the lack of teaching jobs include a poor population without the extra money needed to pay for language tuition and the Peace Corps itself putting volunteer teachers into local schools.

Two English teaching assistant awards in Armenia are available to Americans on the Fulbright US Student Program.

Au Pair & Nanny Jobs

Demand for foreign au pairs is tiny but every now and again a vacancy or two is listed on the website of GreatAuPair.

Low Cost Options for Volunteering

The Armenian Volunteer Corps has a number of programmes that will appeal to volunteers of all ages. Check out our Free or Cheap Volunteer Work in Armenia page on another website in our small group for more details, and for work exchange links.
