Live, Work & Travel in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The problems of Bosnia Herzegovina are well documented and a country held together by UN enforced peace accords is unlikely to offer much in the way of work beyond a few volunteer opportunities. The infrastructure and cultural heritage of the country has mostly been stitched back together and places like Sarajevo and Mostar are increasingly attracting more than a few adventurous travellers.
Teaching & TEFL in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sarajevo has been much in our thoughts recently as we are thinking of living there for a few months next winter once our Turkish residence permits expire. There is a lot that appeals about the city but no chance we will be teaching (because we are not teachers), despite an increasing number of opportunities. The last decade has seen the number of private language schools expand around the country, mostly in Sarajevo but also in other cities, particularly Banja Luka. Fulbright has a couple of opportunities for Americans.
Despite a growing number of schools, the number of jobs is still very limited compared to more mainstream destinations and salaries are low. Teachers that do end up there though tend to talk positively about the country and their students. If you can teach another subject in English try the international schools who pay better, though openings are rare with the holders of those jobs reluctant to give them up readily.
