After
a ski season, many workers move on from their winter in
the Alps to the real glamour job - working on a private
yacht. This type of work can take you all over the
world and can pay *very* well. If you're interested in
working on a yacht, then read this case study on Chris
Alder, now employed on Jacques Villeneuve's private yacht.
Case
Study - Chris Alder
Chris is in the middle of his fifth season in the
Alps. Although not a fully qualified chef, he cooked in
restaurants for several years before landing a job as
chalet host with Crystal Holidays. Now he works as a chef
with Chamonix specialists, Collineige (a job, incidentally,
he found through Natives.co.uk while on holiday in Bolivia!).
At the end of last season, Chris headed to Antibes. Thanks
to his experience and a lot of luck, he soon found himself
on an £11.5m yacht moored in Cannes, cooking for
up to 14 guests and seven crew.
This is not a job for the faint-hearted. 'Supper can stretch
to eight or even ten courses and when the owner was on
board we worked 14-hour days for six weeks solid!', Chris
told Natives. Unlike working in ski resorts, the food
budget was unlimited, and the wages are 'double what I'd
get as a head chef in London', all tax-free.
So
how do you get this sort of job?
Firstly, you need to have the quality. The standards
are very high. Get experience as a restaurant or chalet
chef where you have to organise everything yourself. You
need to be a team player as you're working (and living)
in very cramped quarters and are expected to produce first
class food all the time.
Head to Antibes...
If you think you fit the bill, you can then head down
to Antibes in the South of France at the end of the season.
Make sure you take your CV and references with you and
be prepared to work hard to get a job. The town is packed
full of people looking for work and you need luck and
somewhere to stay while you job search.
