Cut up the Lonely Planet
Too much weight? Loaded down with guidebooks? If you can bear to destroy an expensive book that may currently represent your travel dreams consider cutting out the sections you don't need. Beware though that you may change your plans later and have left information on your new destination at home.
Weight for warmth
Silver space blankets (those things they wrap marathon runners in at the end of the race) are a good warmth for weight option.
