Travel Tips: Getting There & Travelling Around

Men bad at giving directions
Ask local women when you need directions. Men, rather than admit that they do not know the way, will often prefer to guess and send you in the wrong direction.

Train splitting
Beware of 'train splitting'. On some journeys only part of the carriages are bound for your destination, while others will be dropped off along the route to be taken elsewhere by another engine. Make sure you get in the right bit.

Sleep on the train
Overnight train, coach or ferry travel provides a free warm(ish) place to sleep for the night; though it doesn't make for the best start to the new day.

Cheaper tours
When taking a tour book as close to the tour destination as possible. A trip through Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni, for instance, will be cheapest in Uyuni, more expensive in La Paz and much more expensive if booked in your home country.

Accidental tourists
We discovered, quite by accident, that the cheapest way to get a tour is not to want to go on it in the first place. In principle the tour sounded great but we didn't want to do it quite yet, maybe in a few days. One of us had been ill and the other didn't fancy another early start so we kept saying no. The price kept tumbling until we really couldn't refuse at that price.
